Academic Ethos
The school does not follow an exclusively academic admission policy. We prefer to acknowledge that society is inclusive, and that each pupil has been blessed with a unique set of gifts. Our role is to facilitate this potential and nurture each individual to reach their personal Everest.
We recognise that each pupil has a certain learning style within a variety of intelligences. Our teaching methodology encompasses the needs of each child within our strongly ‘pupil-centered’ approach.
In the Foundation, Intermediate and Senior phases, a ‘class teaching’ system is utilised, with specialised visiting staff. This further enhances our philosophy of a ‘pupil-centeredness’.
Learning is seen as ‘life-long’. We develop lateral thinking amongst pupils so that the concept of empowerment is intrinsic, and the making of responsible decisions is considered both vital and critical. In so doing we develop proactive, community minded citizens who are capable of taking their place anywhere on this diverse planet.
Further to our philosophy, at the Waterberg Academy we firmly believe that the generations of the future should be raised as “Free-range chickens” as opposed to “Battery hens”. Certainly, gone are the days where education was regarded as the filling of the pail and expecting children to regurgitate a set body of dogma. It is more about the lighting of a fire and encouraging each individual to fulfill their embryonic potential.
Small class size is entrenched in our code and learning is facilitated through hands-on, real world situations. Life skills are developed within the curriculum and lessons are developed with differentiation in mind.
Selecting Grade 10 Subjects
During the Grade 9 year, pupils spend time exploring individual interests and research careers. A psychological aptitude assessment is carried out to help the pupils in the choice of subjects for the National Senior Certificate. This is based on their strengths, aptitude and interests, with a focus on the requirements at tertiary level.
A Matric certificate today requires that the pupil passes 7 subjects of which two accepted languages (one being the medium of instruction), Mathematics or Mathematics Literacy and Life Orientation are compulsory. The pupil then has to pass a further three subjects.
Currently our subject choice is linked to pupil interest and ability, and the availability of teaching staff. The following subjects are available at Matric level: Business studies; CAT (Computer Application Technology) Life sciences (The old Biology) and Mathematics Literacy.
The current Grade 10 class has the following choices. Mathematics; Physical Science and Geography. In 2011 we will in all probability, add Accounting and Tourism to this list.
COUNSELLING
As part of the ‘pupil-centered’ policy, the counselling of individuals is part of every day life. All staff is available to meet the needs of each pupil and to assist at all times, whether the need be academic, social or emotional.
In the event of other professional services being required, the school has access to the approved personnel.
